A bi-weekly talk show focusing on the history of Scouting as told through the world of Scout collecting, patches and memorabilia.

ClothTalk 030 - We’re back!!

by Ben Killen on October 30th, 2007

2007 National Chief - Order of the Arrow - Evan Chaffee

It’s been a long time, but we’ve finished our server migration and we’re back in action. This episode, we bring you to the Section NE-2C Conclave and talk with the 2007 National Chief of the Order of the Arrow, Evan Chaffee. We also take a moment with Dave Ames who shares his collection of Boy Scout handbooks and New York area OA patches. We also listen in on Northeast Region Chief, Ken Hager trading patches with his fellow scouts at the conclave.

Be sure to visit the National OA website for the most recent version of the National Bulletin the frontpage of which features “iSash” and other ‘Arrow Ads’ which we created with our friends at Coosa Shows. If you’d like to purchase a DVD featuring iSash (as well as the other ads) you can easily do so at The Scout History Project Store. Also, we’ve decided to dial back the frequency of our shows to one a month instead of two. But don’t worry, we’ll keep ‘em comin’ just like always.

‘Hope you’ve enjoyed the show, come back again next time for ClothTalk: bringing you this history of Scouting through collectibles.

We’ve moved!

by Chris Brightwell on September 27th, 2007

OK, so the server migration is (finally!) complete. It took a lot of planning and many long nights staring at a pair of Unix terminals, but we’re finally moved into our new home on the new server.

It’s been a long time since we’ve posted an episode of ClothTalk, but we’re hoping to be back to a regular release schedule very soon.

Since you last heard our voices, we’ve moved the entire site to a new server, upgraded all of the software, optimized the databases, cleaned out some dead files, and completely reorganized the back end of the site. What does that mean for you, the listener? It means that our job, after all this effort, has gotten a little bit easier.

Also, as the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed, we’ve moved the ClothTalk site from scouthistory.net/blog to scouthistory.net/clothtalk, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. WordPress is a bear to move. The good news is that, through some technical magic, all of your old ClothTalk bookmarks will still work!

Ben and Tim working on a new episode of ClothTalk and I’m still testing everything I can on the new server. If you have an idea for the show or find a problem with the site, please leave us a comment or drop us an email (clothtalk@clothtalk.com) and let us know!

Gone but not forgotten

by Ben Killen on August 9th, 2007

If you’re a ClothTalk regular, i’m sure you’ve noticed its been a while since you’ve heard a peep out of us. After more than a year of bi-weekly production, we decided to give ourselves a bit of a break and take the summer off. Even so, we have been hard at work planning and preparing for bigger and better things in the future of The Scout History Project.

Soon we will be upgradading our hosting and migrating our website to a new server, which we hope will go very smoothly. Also, we’ve begun planning on the biggest, most exciting thing we’ve even taken on at The Scout History Project…but we’ll have more on that later. So fear not, we may be gone, but we’ve not forgotten. Keep an eye on this page, or sign up for the email notification because we will be back to our regular bi-weekly schedule very soon.

Thanks,
_ben

ClothTalk 025 - Topkis (part 2)

by Ben Killen on March 26th, 2007

Better late than never

Better late than never right? Sorry for the missed episode last time. Our brains were on spring break and they took our computers with them. But we’re back this week with the second half of our incredible interview with one of Scouting’s most notable collectors and historians: Bill Topkis.

Join us as Bill talks about the golden days of trading at events like the one he attended in Navarro California, as well as some of the best ways to store your collection archivally. Do you know the secret of the oldest known vigil pin? Bill does. But that’s not all, Bill knows a lot more about these OA Totem pins that predated flaps—like the elusive moose and the original gold turkey? Tune in as Bill gives us the scoop.

John Pannell isn’t with us this week—he’s come down with a bad case of March Madness. Also this week, we’ll get a report back from Ben’s ski excursion in the Poconos. And Daniel Hodge, creator of our notorious theme music, is moving back to the land of the midnight sun for good, but before he goes, he shares about some of the patches he’s come across since he’s been home. We forgot to include Brandon’s TOR update, but he’s been updating his reference page in the wiki. Sorry Brandon, we’ll be back on track next time.
