[edit] Scouting as a Youth

[edit] Cub Scouts

I don't remember much of my Cub Scouting days. My pack was in Higdon, AL and chartered by the North Sand Mountain PTO. I do remember joining on a school night. They had door prizes and I won a first aid kit. I earned my Bobcat, Wolf & Bear. I would have probably continued, but the pack dissolved. I still have my hat and the first Pinewood Derby car I made. The time would have been around 1979-1981.

[edit] Boy Scouts

I rejoined Scouting when I was 14, at Troop 253 of Flat Rock, AL, chartered by the Flat Rock Ruritan Club. My first camping experience was summer camp at Camp Jackson in 1986. I didn't waste any time -- as soon as my time requirements had been meet for a rank, I made sure the SM knew it. I quickly made it to the rank of First Class. After making Life and completing my Eagle project, the troop dissolved. I transferred to Troop 23 of Bryant, AL, chartered by the Bryant Ruritan Club, where Herbert Pace served as Scoutmaster. I finished my Eagle Board of Review and earned my Eagle in July of 1989. I also earned the God and Baptist award as a youth. I served in many leadership positions for both troops including Scribe, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, which we affectionately called "JazzMan."

[edit] Order of the Arrow

I was tapped out for the Order of the Arrow at the Spring Camporee held at Camp Jackson. That was still when they actually did tap outs, instead of call outs. My Ordeal was at Camp Jackson in 1988. I was immediately elected as Chapter Secretary, where one of my first tasks was to create a database of Arrowmen in the Chiaha Chapter of Kasksanmpo Lodge. At chapter meetings, we began working on Native drumming and dance. Our chapter members also became members of Post 310 which allowed us to raise money and travel. We normally took 2 trips each year as a chapter. In the winter, we went spelunking at Cumberland Caverns, and in the summer we went to either Gulf Shores, Panama City Beach or Natchez Trace.

In the Spring of 1989, I attended my first Conclave at Camp Comer, hosted by Achunanchi Lodge. I was totally hooked. I was nominated for Section Secretary, which scared me to death. I sealed my membership the summer of 1989 and went through the Brotherhood ceremony at Camp Jackson. I was elected Vice Chief for the Lodge in the fall of 1989 and served with Lodge Chief Dan Seymour. Somewhere in all of this, I took on the role of the guide in the Pre-Ordeal ceremony. I also served as one of the 4 principles in the 75th Anniversary Rededication Ceremony. In the summer of 1990 I attended my first NOAC at Indiana University. I became inactive in 1992 after moving to Tuscaloosa for college.

[edit] Scouting as an Adult

[edit] Cub Scouts

Finally, the day I had waited for had arrived. My son was finally old enough to join the Cub Scouts and we were both chomping at the bits. We joined Pack 263 of Scottsboro, AL, chartered by Cumberland Presbyterian Church. I became the Assistant Cubmaster, and then later, the Cubmaster. We went to every event we could and Jacob excelled at everything. Also, during this time, I was employed briefly by the Greater Alabama Council as the District Executive for the Mountain Lake District which concluded in May of 2003. I also served the Mountain Lake District as Chairman of the Program committee, and was honored to receive the District Award of Merit in 2004. It was also my pleasure to serve as Program Director for the 2003 Mountain Lake Day Camp held at Stevenson City Park, where I also was the shooting sports director. I served as the Camp Director for the 2004 Mountain Lake Day Camp, and again served as shooting sports director. My son progressed from Bobcat to his Arrow of Light. We transferred to a unit a little closer to home while he was a Webelos Scout. Ider Pack 4304, chartered by Woodmen of the World, became our new home and I became the Assistant Webelos Den Leader and the Assistant Cubmaster. While there, I was awarded the Cub Scouter Award in February of 2005.

[edit] Boy Scouts

After earning my Eagle and turning 18, I served as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 23 for 2 years until I moved off to college. In 1995, I was called on to serve as Unit Commissioner for the Jackson District of the Tennessee Valley Council. I dropped out of Scouting until my son was old enough to join as a Cub Scout (see above).

The time finally came for my son to crossover into Ider's Troop 304 and I became Assistant Scoutmaster. I received the Boy Scout Leader Training Award in February of 2006. Currently, I also assist with the district committee by serving as the program chairman, as the moderator for the district Yahoo group, and became the training chairman in 2007. In May of 2008 I became the Scoutmaster. I also started Crew 50 which supports Coosa Shows in 2007 and serve as Crew Adviser.

[edit] Order of the Arrow

I begin my interest again in the OA while my son was still a Cub Scout. I paid my dues and came to a few events, a work day, an ordeal, etc. Then in August of 2005, I had the first 5 from my troop to come to an Ordeal. I hardly knew anyone, but served as an Elangomat. At the Fall Fellowship, I brought my video camera, hoping to help with the Coosa Shows staff. Much like patch trading has bridged the gap between Scouts and Scouters meeting for the first time, video production introduced me to a new group of friends. I guess I fit right in and found my niche. I've helped with just about every event since. I received the Vigil Honor at the 2007 Fall Fellowship at Camp Comer. My Vigil name is Mawenemen Waselenikan, which is interpreted as Gatherer of Light.

[edit] Coosa Shows

My list of projects for Coosa Shows would pale compared to those that have come before me. Since 1998, these Arrowmen have been producing shows with whatever gear they had on hand. I wish I'd stayed involved through these years, because I would have been at every event up to my elbows working on shows. But I am glad to be here now for I truly enjoy the fellowship, the work, and the fun of working together. At the Fall Fellowship of '06, I was asked to be the Coosa Shows Adviser, as Chris Brightwell was stepping down to take on other responsibilities with in the Lodge. It was my great honor to accept and hope to keep with the traditions before me while bringing us to higher places by working together. It's a challange to see what we can do that we haven't done before. Our greatest projects that I've been involved with have been iShash, ArrowAds, Ceremony DVD for National, Unit Election DVD for National, ArrowCorps5 Opening & Closing, and more to come.

[edit] Shows 2008

Shows has brought on several projects for me and my crew in 2008. I served as the CVC Shows Adviser for the 2008 SR-6S Conclave at Camp Lumpkin. I served as the Technical Director for ArrowCorps5 Mark Twain Site in June of 2008. Coosa Shows has been asked to work on several projects by National: Ceremony DVD, Unit Election DVD, ArrowCorps5 Opening and Closing.

[edit] Wood Badge

"I use to be an Antelope, a good ol' Antelope too . . ." I attended Wood Badge SR-711 in the spring of 2005 under the leadership of Scoutmaster David Gross. I finished my tickets in the summer of 2006. Wood Badge has been one of the more significant experiences in my Scouting career, second only to receiving my Eagle at this point. The friendships I made will last a lifetime. I am currently serving as Troop Guide of the Buffaloes for SR-865 and served as Historian for SR-821.

[edit] Looking Forward

One of the most exciting things for me looking forward is my young son. Since his Ordeal, he has already been drumming and dancing, served as an Elangomat, Elangomat Chariman, Vigil Honor Selection Committee for 2009, and helped with Coosa Shows. His a much better Scout than I ever was. It will be most thrilling watching him as he grows and matures in his Scouting career. He competed as a dancer at his first Conclave in April of 2007 at SR-6S hosted by Waguli 318. He brought home a 2nd place trophy for Old-Style Dance and a 2nd Place trophy for Old-Style Outfit. Second to that, I am excited about what the future holds for Coosa Shows. We already have some amazing projects lined up, some may even be distributed past the borders of our lodge and council. I can't wait.
